First Time Driving

It’s only hard work now, once you have mastered this thing it’s super easy.

Does anyone remember the first time you got into a car how hard it was to remember everything you needed to do and where everything was.

Then even after you got your driving license and you understood it all, do you remember how daunting and scary it was to sit behind that wheel in control of this big machine, things coming at your from all angels, you needed to concentrate on everything, other cars, their speed, your lane how fast you was going.

Now fast forward to today when you drive on the phone, with the radio on, whilst talking to yourself or recording a novel or playing out the days meetings in your mind.

You don’t see the car, you don’t think about other people on the road, you just do it because your brain has made the act of driving into a habit which you can now do without thinking.

You can’t consciously concentrate on to many things at once, because your brain needs to focus on new things, but do something long enough and regular enough and your brain takes over and takes care of it for you.

Its actually pretty cool when you think about it, we are so lucky to have this little machine in our heads that is so damn amazing and it’s only when we realise its potential that we can push ourselves further than we ever thought possible.

Next time you are driving your car down the street try to notice everything you are doing on complete autopilot without even thinking.

From changing gear too accelerating to putting up the window or calling a friend or turning on the radio and then external, staying in lane, watching the traffic lights, reading the street signs avoiding collisions, thinking about your route ahead and the time of day so will there be traffic on this route or that route and maybe your even dictating your messages for your team or dictating a novel all at the same time without even thinking about it.

Now how amazing does this make you feel? How god damn amazing are we as a species that we can do all this without thinking?

So forgive me for saying when someone tells me this is complicated, or this is hard or I can’t do this. Look at everything you do every single time you get in your car and just drive down the street and then tell me its hard, you can do anything if you do it enough.
